Welcome to Beyond Civility where citizens and civic leaders meet to explore the barriers and bridges to effective dialogue.
Campus Protests, Public Safety, and Free Speech
Thomas Jefferson said of the University of Virginia,
“this institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.”
This famous quote presents a sharp contrast with the political correctness that is commanding attention on college campuses across the country, at places like the University of California, Miami University and Middlebury College. This program will explore the tensions currently erupting between our desire for respectful speech and First Amendment rights, how Universities respond, and the roles of the people in the middle: students, faculty and administrators.

Not content to stand on the edges of partisan divides, participants here are stepping forward to meet their counterparts, competitors, and even those they perceive as ideological nemeses to find new and better ways to solve problems…together.
Join us here as we learn and practice techniques for communicating around and through our differences; communicating to hear and be heard, to understand and be understood, and to show and receive respect.
